I once wrote an article for Louisiana Life so long ago that I called, “Adventures of an Ursuline.”  It was about Marie Madeleine Hachard, who journeyed to New Orleans from France in the early 1700’s, based on her journal.  I specifically remember her account of coming upriver from the Gulf of Mexico after their sea voyage, in a skiff of some sort with guides and they had to camp on the banks of the Mississippi before they reached Nouvelle Orleans.  She described sitting by the campfire in area “filled with creatures, snakes, wildlife, serpents, birds, and vipers.”  It was her trio mentioning of the damned schnakes that made me decide this was a girl after my own heart!
